ABOUT

In a world where artificiality often prevails over authenticity, Max Vadukul’s exhibition emerges as a clear testament to human strength and resilience. After debuting in Dubai under the title Timeless, this collection of 36 large-format black-and-white portraits of women was later renamed, enriched and exhibited in the prestigious setting of Gallerie d’Italia Milan, opened under the patronage of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana during Fashion Week in September 2023.

Through Her Eyes is a journey into the eternal feminine. The artist’s attentive gaze traverses centuries and traditions to offer us a multifaceted representation of woman, who constantly relates to her roles in society and her inner world. The inspiring muse and unique protagonist of this artistic quest is the ethereal Ludmilla Voronkina Bozzetti.

Ludmilla, the subject of this fascinating narrative, is much more than a model. Her magnetic presence and strength make her the supporting soul of this exhibition that perfectly complements Max Vadukul’s extraordinary art. Taken at the timeless Villa Gattoni, in Meleti (Lombardy), the photographs capture Ludmilla’s evolution in an enchanting journey that forms the heart of Vadukul’s narrative.

Ludmilla, in the photographer’s vision, is multifaceted: daughter, wife, mother, seductress, worker. She is at once absorbed and detached, sad and reflective, but also strong, confident and triumphant. Vadukul shows that woman is an infinite kaleidoscope of different perspectives and worlds, an infinite feminine world that cannot be immortalized in a single shot.

Each image awakens in the audience an awareness of the impossibility of labeling her: she is simultaneously everything, encompassing life in her womb and the future in her hands. Max Vadukul’s art becomes a tribute to the history of women, to their journey through the centuries. Ludmilla’s feminine energy and strength, which traverses history and manifests itself in the artist’s photographs, calls to the heart of the viewer the eternal respect owed to woman.

The art project Through Her Eyes – Timeless Strength took shape in 2021, when Vadukul met Ludmilla during a shoot for Roberto Cavalli’s Zero Collection. Max was thunderstruck: “She was different, really different. She had a history and a past; a real strength and I started photographing her over and over again. In fact, I felt I had found someone who could create strong Vadukul images. I wanted to create an art project with her,” says the photographer. The photographs are true works of art, in which Ludmilla’s feelings are captured, blended and enhanced by Vadukul’s extraordinary craftsmanship. The portraits, in black and white, paint Ludmilla’s past and history on her face and body. Vadukul’s camera becomes a bridge between the viewer and the protagonist, transcending the conventions of traditional photography. His lens enhances women, allowing them to enter the scene as observers and not just as objects of observation. Ludmilla’s meticulous style and transformations from a young woman to an older matriarch, even a male figure, emphasize the dynamic adaptability of women. Vadukul is committed to the authenticity of his work, rejecting the artifice of digital retouching and presenting portraits on paper, framed without glass. His pursuit of tonal depth and the intensity of blacks lend an almost tactile dimension to his portraits. Although shot digitally, the images are unretouched, allowing the natural beauty of the subjects to shine through.
